Job Title: Mechanical Automation Engineer
Reports To: Engineering Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
Summary: Assists in the development of custom machinery for internal and external customers by designing, specifying, sourcing, assembling, and testing mechanical components such as tooling, guarding and structural, and controls components. Travel as needed to customer sites for installation, maintenance, and service of equipment. May also assist with electrical design and fabrication as well as programming when needed.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Design weld tooling to quickly and accurately locate part(s) to be welded in position.
- Specify motion control hardware to manipulate laser welding optics and/or the workpiece and/or tooling to execute the necessary weld(s) and secondary operations.
- Design support systems to rigidly maintain the relative positions of the workpiece, the CNC, tooling, and ancillary components underweight and cost constraints.
- Design enclosures and safety systems to contain the process and protect the operator and others from the laser beam and other hazards.
- Design, specify, assemble and document pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and control systems to meet the needs of the system.
- Specify purchased components, including vendors and part numbers, with consideration to price, availability, and functionality.
- Work with purchasing department to select vendors for custom fabricated components. Work with internal and external vendors as needed while parts are being made.
- Assemble mechanically static and dynamic components.
- Test mechanical assembly for conformance with the design intent. Debug and modify as needed.
- Work with electrical and software engineers to help debug interactions between mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
- Travel to customer's facilities as needed to assist with the initial installation of systems and maintenance, debugging, and service.
- Fabricate simple components or modify components using standard machine shop tools (lathe, knee mill, surface grinder, etc).
- Detail components and assemblies for fabrication and assembly according to accepted engineering standards.
- Maintain complete and accurate Bills of Materials for relevant systems.
- Prepare clear and accurate documentation to describe the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of systems.
- Report on progress to management (develop schedules and timelines for projects)
- Work with customers to ensure that their needs are understood and met
- Maintain a clean and well-organized work environment.
- Maintain a current understanding of relevant products and services that may be useful to the team.
- Travel to vendors and industry conferences as needed for information, training, and product demonstrations.
- Assist with design and assembly of electrical panels and enclosures, including component selection, layout, mounting components, wiring, etc. according to a prepared electrical schematic.
- Create, modify, test and debug control software for equipment in Visual Basic.NET, ladder logic, or other languages.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on the company and projects to customers, conferences, etc.
- Assist with optical design for laser optics and viewing optics.
- Assist in the preparation of filings to government regulatory agencies such as the FDA.
- Visit customers in the sales phase to evaluate project requirements and sell JTA capabilities.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related field or equivalent experience
Desired Qualifications:
- Solidworks (3D Modeling, Drawings, PDM, Simulation preferred)
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Solidworks Electrical is a plus
- CAM software is a plus
Specialized Equipment Knowledge:
- Machine Shop tools (Knee Mill, engine lathe, surface grinder, belt grinder, etc)
- Manual, Electric, and Pneumatic hand tools (Die Grinder, drill, files, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc)
- Precision measurement tools (Calipers, height stand, dial indicator, micrometer, etc)
- Electrical fabrication equipment (Soldering iron, crimping tools, Panel fabrication, etc)
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Math Ability:
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases.
Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
